Cobi van de Kuit - Blokker

Cobi van de Kuit is the artist who created The Rose for the monument for The Unknown Child.

Personal monuments for a grave…… the human being was, the sculpture is…………!
Cobi van de Kuit, founder of Blokker & Co, started this project four years ago.
Someone very dear to her had died. With the family and closest friends Cobi looked for materials and symbols that were close to the deceased person. She translated that into a garden on the grave. It brought a lot of comfort to the relatives.
But a garden on the grave disappears when the stone is put in place. In The Netherlands it usually takes several weeks to months before a tomb stone is ready. For the period in between the burial and the placing of the tomb Cobi can arrange a temporary sculpture.

These days Cobi is also creating paintings on the graves for permanent use. She does that with very different materials such as wood, iron, glass, acrylic fibre, which is very clear like glass.
These sculptures exist of several layers of acrylic fibre. She makes a painting on top of the bottom layer, which is then covered with another acrylic layer, which creates depth. It has an especially wonderful effect when the sun shines on it.
Blokker & Co does not want to focus on the end of life, but emphasizes the never ending memory.
The creation is special because it has to do with the life of the individual person and not only the end of that life. It becomes a very personal memory for a unique person.
From the contact with the next of kin an idea is born. On that idea Cobi creates a design.
It is even possible to put small personal belongings into the acrylic sculpture.

For Stichting Roos (Rose Foundation) Cobi (born in Ede, The Netherlands, on 30 October 1951) created the monuments for Aruba, Sweden , Poland, Egypt, France and The Netherlands.
